Athlete of the Month

VINCENTE INIQUEZ

Olympic Swimming

Vincente Iniquez, a 17 year-old Junior honor student at Lindblom Math & Science Academy excels in the water as a competitive swimmer and year-round life guard.  He is a captain on the Lindblom swim team, competing in both the City and State Championships the previous year and working as a Chicago Park District Life Guard, where he proudly claims 23 saves last summer.

Iniquez also life guards at the winter Lindblom Make a Splash program every Saturday where appreciates the opportunity to earn an income year round and is impressed with the turnout of neighborhood kids and adults learning to swim. Alan Demski, Lindbloom Swim Coach and Make A Splash Program Manager nominated Iniquez for the World Sport Chicago Athlete of the Month because “he is a model athlete, student and young man.”

In the pool, Iniquez prefers the breast stroke and likes to swim against his faster teammates, who provide him stiff competition and push him to get better.  In fact one particularly fast freshman teammate provides Iniquez with some of his biggest challenges because as he exclaims, “I can’t lose to a freshman!”

Iniquez has his eye on the future, starting to explore his options for colleges with strong swimming programs.  He also knows he will have a life long passion and a valuable skill as a life guard.
