One aspect of the Olympic bid that I think many people enjoyed was the opportunity to participate in large events. Whether it was a sport event, the city and neighborhood parades or visits of various dignitaries the higher visibility activities tended to be very rewarding. Well, in September World Sport Chicago has a couple events that take us back to those activities. On September 18th we will be hosting the World Sport Chicago Family Sports Festival.

The Family Sports Fest, on the Midway Plaisance, brings together all Chicago’s professional sports teams as well as community organizations in a day long festival. The objective of the day is to help kids from around the city find a sport that they enjoy and a place were they can participate in that sport. With over 30 various community organizations and the pro teams we believe this will be a very exciting event for participants and for all of us. This festival is the kick off to the Beyond Sport Conference. World Sport Chicago is the host for this conference that focuses on providing a global focus on sport as a social development tool. The last week of September will see many dignitaries from the sports world here not only for the conference but also for working sessions in the early part of the week. These early sessions will bring together city and international experts to discuss the role that sport can play in gender equality and in addressing urban violence. WSC is right in the middle of these activities and opportunities to be involved as a volunteer are already available.

2010 MDSTPI don’t want to spend all the time looking forward. I think it’s important to recognize the success we had with a number of our programs this summer. The last meet of our summer track program was on August 7th. We had more than 400 kids register in the program this summer and, while we had some of the meets rain-out, once again we had a lot of compliments from parents, coaches and kids about the program. Thanks to all of you who came out and helped us with the meets.

BAM ArcheryOne other program to highlight is the BAM + Sport program. This is the youth anti-violence program we launched last school year.  Given its success we continued a summer version of the program that was met with a lot of interest in the various schools. We are expecting the results of the research from the program to be released in early October. However, given the importance of continued support for Chicago’s at risk youth we will continue to work with Youth Guidance and offer the program in a number of schools this year. Right now our focus is on supporting 6 or 7 schools with the program. Our hope is that positive results from the research will enable us to get the support we need to expand the program to even more schools.

Experience interactive sports demonstrations and clinics for more than 20 different sports. Meet players and alumni from the Chicago Bears, Bulls, Cubs, Fire, Red Stars, Sky, and White Sox. Discover the sports you enjoy and get connected to programs and facilities across Chicago where you can get active all year round. With entertainment, music and more the Family Sports Festival is a celebration of sports and health. Visit the Family Sports Festival event page for more information. Whether as an attendee or volunteer we look forward to seeing you there!

Chicago Cubs' Chief Marketing Officer Wally Hayward is appointed to chair the WSC marketing and communications committee. Wally directs the full formation of the committee, seeking to build the organizations key messages, overall awareness and lasting brand identity. He spends a little bit of time talking about his new role with WSC.

The 2010 Mayor Daley's Summer Track Program culminated on August 7th, 2010 with the city-wide Championship meet. In total over 440 children were registered for this year's program representing over half of the city's wards. We gave out over 120 medals and cheered the kids on throughout the day.  Special thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers who came out in support.
