The Chicago Paralympic Development Program is the only entity of its kind in the country, partnering with existing agencies in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs to enhance the opportunities for individuals with physical and visual disabilities to access sport and recreation activities.
Adaptive sports provide such an opportunity, capitalizing on athletes’ strengths and skills, and making necessary adjustments to the sport rules and/or equipment to accommodate athletes with physical or visual disabilities.  The most successful and elite athletes will compete at the Paralympic Games, the highest level of international competition for athletes with physical or visual disabilities.
Often times a lack of appropriate equipment, unskilled coaches, and inadequate transportation are typical barriers to participation in adaptive sport. World Sport Chicago provides expertise and resources that remove these barriers and allows more people to live healthy, active lives.
Adaptive sport and disability inclusion
- WSC is currently working with sport partners to host adaptive sport clinics in Chicago Public Schools in order to increase the awareness of and exposure to adaptive sports.
- WSC is developing an Inclusive Sports Curriculum that will encourage able-bodied students and students with disabilities to participate together in various sports and activities
- Athlete Ambassadors, particularly those who have a disability, will promote disability awareness at their partner schools.
