Paralympic sailing is a more recent addition to the Paralympic games, debuting in 2000 in Sydney. The sport is now practiced in over 70 countries at both a development and national level. Paralympic sailing is open to athletes with an amputation, cerebral palsy, blindness/visual impairment, spinal injuries, and les autres – with competitors with the severest disabilities competing in a separate event. Those with the most severe disabilities compete in the Two-Person Keelboat event, which is specifically designed to meet their needs, with all
others participating in either the Single-Person or Three-Person Kellboat events. All three events are open to both men and women.
The sport is governed by the International Association for Disabled Sailing (IFDS), which closely co-operates with the International Sailing Federation (World Governing Body for Sailing).
