Wallstrom in 1910 and debuted at the Games in Berlin in 1936. Today, handball is played indoors by both men and women who follow similar rules and regulations – officials introduced the women's division in 1976.

In handball, two teams of seven players each compete in a fast-paced game where individuals pass, throw, catch, and dribble a small ball with their hands while trying to score goals. After two 30-minute halves, the team with the most points wins the game. The game is played out on a court that measures 40 meters (131.2 feet) Men's Team Handball in actionlong by 20 meters (65.6 feet) wide with a goal at the center of either end. Six competitors from each team (the seventh acts as a goalkeeper) race back and forth across the court in what is typically a very physical game.

The handball used in the game – made out of pure leather – measures 23 inches around for men's competitions and 22 inches around for women's competitions.
